One of our authors, Professor Emerita Shelley Gavigan of Osgoode Hall Law School, passed away on Sunday, April 20th. Shelley made immense contributions to Osgoode Hall Law School, particularly as Director of the Parkdale Clinic and as the hand-picked Associate Dean to the late Peter Hogg when he served as Dean. A long-time member and supporter of the Osgoode Society, Shelley decided to do a doctorate in legal history in mid-career, and I was fortunate to be her supervisor at the University of Toronto. She wrote an excellent thesis, which later became an award-winning book published by the Society and UBC Press in 2012: Hunger, Horses and Government Men: Criminal Law on the Aboriginal Plains, 1870-1905. The book was awarded an honourable mention for the then John A. MacDonald prize, given by the Canadian Historical Association for the best book in any field of Canadian history. It also won a CHA Clio Prize for the Prairie region and was an honourable mention for the 2013 Canadian Law and Society Association Book Prize. Shelley is greatly missed by her numerous friends and admirers.
