CHRIS ENGLISH. The Osgoode Society notes with deep regret the passing of one of our authors, Christopher (Chris) English, in St John’s on August 11, 2023. Chris was for many years a Professor of History at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a distinguished scholar of the history of France. In 1990, in the midst of a very successful career, Chris earned an LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School, one of his teachers being Osgoode Society Associate Editor Philip Girard. Philip would be too modest to say that his influence persuaded Chris to become a legal historian, but such was undoubtedly the case. Chris established a legal history programme at Memorial, which is still running and always popular. Chris contributed a chapter on Newfoundland to the first volume of the Canadian State Trials series. His most notable contribution to the Society’s publishing programme was Christopher English, ed., Essays in the History of Canadian Law Volume IX: Two Islands, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island (2005).
